Who to cheer for in the World Cup

The Hot Corner Column: So, your favorite team did not make it to the World Cup. Welcome to the club.

Whether your allegiances lie with the U.S., Netherlands or Italy you are in need of a new team to root for as World Cup action takes place. But there are so many options who do you choose?

If you are a fan of the underdog, (but who isn't) there are a bevy of options. But some more realistic than others, and if you are looking to stick with one team as long as possible might I recommend Iceland.

Iceland stole the show in the 2016 Euros making it all the way to the quarter-finals, before being eliminated by France 5-2. During their run they went toe to toe with big name teams, and World Cup counterparts, Portugal and England.

Lead by a potentially healthy Gylfi Sigurdsson, Iceland has a chance to get by Croatia and Nigeria to advance to the round of 16.

If you are a fan of sustained success, your team of choice should be Germany. You could make the argument that other teams, such as Brazil, Spain and etc., have all had sustained success. But Germany is attempting to do someone only two other teams have done in World Cup history, win back to back cups, and they have a good chance.

Germany ran out its "B-team" during the 2017 Confederations Cup, and won. This team is stacked with talent and is poised for another run.

If you are a fan of breaking curses, Mexico has been dealing with a nasty curse. If you were overjoyed by the Cubs 2016 World Series run, or the Red Sox breaking the curse of the Bambino, then Mexico has just the curse for you. They have yet to advance past the round of 16.

Whether they have lost to games they were favorites in, or allowed heartbreaking goals in the 98' minute, Mexico has had its hands-full with the round of 16.

If you are a fan of soccer legends grabbing their World Cups, Portugal and Argentina have the two biggest names in soccer, Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo.

If you are a fan of the unlikely, Saudi Arabia or Panama are both dead last with 1000-1 odds to win the cup. It may seem unattainable, but so did Leicester cities incredible run and the Vegas Golden Knight's Stanley Cup appearance.
