Last Saturday, Daniel Cormier defeated Stipe Miocic to win the UFC Heavyweight title. While people weren’t necessarily surprised that Cormier won, they were surprised that he won when he did and how he did as Cormier won by knockout in the first round. Cormier became only the second fighter ever, Connor McGregor is the other, that has two championships belts in two different weight classes at the same time.
But even though Cormier captured the Heavyweight title, that wasn’t the highlight of the evening. No, in fact that highlight came moments after when WWE star Brock Lesnar broke into the octagon in a fit of rage. He was so mad as he grabbed the microphone and started yelling profanity at both Miocic and Cormier. Right after that he and Cormier got into a pushing and yelling match which took the whole situation from weird, to downright bizarre.
What all came out of this whole thing, which was basically just a WWE reenactment, was what looks like a fight between Cormier and Lesnar for the Heavyweight title. UFC President Dana, has said that this is going to happen and all other reports seem to confirm that this fight is going to happen.
Lesnar, according to Dana White, has already given USADA(United States Anti-Doping Agency) notice to re-enter the drug testing pool for the UFC and his name should appear on the testing list possibly as soon as next week. Lesnar still has to serve a suspension because of a failed drug test at his last fight at UFC 200.
This is all great, but the question is why? We don’t need this fight, not at all. Lesnar has a 5-3 record in his UFC career and is 40 years old and not exactly in his prime. Cormier is also close to 40, but Cormier also constantly fights in UFC so he is much more ready for this type of fight than Lesnar. The only entertaining thing about this would be everything leading up to it.
After that? Man that fight could be a dud. Cormier is the much better fighter, and its not even close. The only thing that Lesnar would bring, would be killer instinct because he clearly wants to destroy Cormier. The problem is that's about all Lesnar will have as Cormier is just better in every other phase.
This fight will certainly grow and grow with popularity and hype because of the names, but we don’t need this fight. In Fact, we shouldn't even want this fight because there is nothing to gain out of it except paying money to see something that will most likely end in Cormier crushing Lesnar.
All in all, this fight could easily end up as a flop and doesnt have high chances of being a great success. UFC fans and sports fans all over should not want this fight because it will be a much, much worse version of Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao. Except this fight will be much, much shorter, maybe even a minute short.
